Hallmark Dummy Launcher – A Must Have Retriever Training Tool

Hallmark Dummy Launcher with Duck

The Hallmark Dummy Launcher is a must have tool in your retriever training bag of tricks. It gives you the sound of the shot and the fall of the bird. Pups learn at an early age to focus not only on the flight of the dummy but the sound of the shot. This training tool, incorporated with proper noise or sound conditioning, will give your pup an advantage as he advances along the path to non-slip retriever status.

This is the most durable and dependable launcher on the market. The quality steel construction and a non-slip handle make it easy to use in all weather conditions. It’s never failed me once over 5 years of use and abuse in the field and requires minimal maintenance. Laura Haines, 2nd generation owner of Hallmark Dog Supplies, has requested a picture of my launcher because it may own the record for durability.

Ryder and Stan at the World Championships

Ryder and Stan at the World Championships

Marley Sporting Dog Supplies spent the weekend of October 23 – 25, 2009 at the Bird Dog Challenge World Championships and did not do as well as we wanted. It came down to a lack of preparation with the dogs and their endurance level. I needed to do more work on their endurance and get their heads right for the game. Just because the dogs did well the last time they ran does not mean they will be able to do it again after a full 6 month layoff.

So, what could I as a trainer have done different? Well, the first thing that I would do different would be to train a little harder on their cardio-vascular system and then work to build their endurance by doing 15 minute hunts without birds in the field. That would help them work hard enough to get their endurance level up. Once their endurance level has been built up, I will then work to increase their speed by planting 10 birds in the field to see how fast they can find all ten.

Finally, basic training cannot be forgotten because of the need to have complete control and work the dog in order to put them in the best position to win. The issues from the weekend include Ryder not hunting like he should and Bella just running out of gas. Neither problem leads to a good outcome. Vince Lombardi is quoted as saying, “Perfect Practice makes Perfect Execution.” We needed the perfect execution this weekend to advance.

Hondo, What Were You Thinking?

Hondo, What Were You Thinking?

Humorous musings of conversations between handlers and dogs.

We all have had conversations with our dogs even though dogs don’t speak our language.  Non-verbal communication and body language can tell us a lot about what they are thinking.  Dogs have a sense of humor in some of their actions, and it shows up a lot in the conversations that some handlers have had with their dogs.
What were you thinking when you tried to catch that bird at 60 yards?
Dog: Well Boss, I thought the bird was going to get away, so I couldn’t wait on you to get in position.
Handler: Well now we have cost ourselves a tournament, what do you have to say for yourself?
Dog: Sorry boss, (look of actual remorse) I won’t do that again.
Handler: Too late now, you just cost us $500.00. Thanks Kid.
After breaking during a hunt test, the question is asked of the dog, WHY?
Dog: Well Boss, your knee buckled and when we are hunting that usually means you killed the bird and I can go get it.
Handler: You knew we were trying to complete your <insert hunt test title here> and I only release you on your name!
Dog: Yeah well, I felt like I had the signal to go.
Handler: When will you get it through your head that I am in charge, not you.
Dog: Yessir Boss, I’ll try to do better.
Handler: Too late now, you’re incorrigible.
Dog goes right when you tell him to go left. What were YOU thinking?
Dog: I smelled something over here that needed to be investigated. I thought this was where the bird was.
Handler: In this case, your nose is overruled by my knowledge.  I told you to go left!
Dog: Get a grip, I hunt with my nose, and you don’t always know where the birds are!
Handler: In this case, we are at a hunt test and they put the bird where I told you to go.  Remember, I’m in charge of this party and I can put you up for not listening.  You don’t want to stop hunting do you?
Dog: No sir, I think I’ll go left and pick up the bird over there.  Thanks for the second chance to do it right.
Ryder and Pups Playing In Iowa

Dog looks at you in disgust after you miss the 6th bird at the Nationals to win, and he asks, “Dad, I found you five birds real quick and I gave you such an easy shot, WHAT HAPPENED?”

Handler: Sorry kid, but I couldn’t take the pressure, how about catching the last bird for me next time.
Dog: No, how about you learn how to shoot.  I held up my end of the bargain and you failed at yours.
Handler: Well, I don’t think that’s fair coming from you considering you missed the last bird you tried to catch.  I had to shoot it for you.
Dog: I shouldn’t have to catch the birds; you need to learn how to shoot.
Handler: Kennel! I’m not taking the lip from you.
Dog: Pees on boot, and then promptly jumps into the kennel.  Then says, “See I can still get the last word”

Well, these are just a few conversations that have occurred between Ryder, Bella, or Hondo and me.  After missing the last bird at the National Championships in 2009 to win the BDC Doubles National Title, Ryder gave me the look like I was the idiot and he was the genius.  You probably have some stories like those above.  Let me know some of your handler/dog conversations or dog/handler conversations.
